Ghazal Tahir

Hub Manager (NSW|ACT|QLD)

Growing up in Pakistan, Ghazal found herself amidst the contrasting worlds of strong, independent women at home and a society deeply rooted in patriarchy. Unlike many around her she was brought up in a home full of books and a love of English + Urdu literature that from an early age instilled an innate sense of curiosity of the world

This duality of experience perplexed her and remained a constant source of inspiration as well; while she was nurtured in an environment promoting freedom and expression, outside her home, the traditional norms often felt restrictive and conflicting. The stark differences in these two worlds fueled her fascination with the human condition and her role as a woman within it.

Her pursuit of knowledge led her on an academic journey, from a Liberal Arts degree in Pakistan to a Masters in ‘Social and Political Thought’ in Sussex, UK, and an unfinished PhD in Philosophy at UNSW, Sydney. Always the explorer, Ghazal's career has been multifaceted; from teaching Sociology and Philosophy to capturing poignant Partition tales in Pakistan's first oral history project. Her desire to understand and advocate for women took form when she conducted field research on women's rights in rural Pakistan for the Department for International Development that resulted in a published study.

In her spare time, Ghazal enjoys listening to podcasts, reading books, dancing when no one's watching, and her most favorite sound in the world is hearing her daughter and husband laughing. And for reasons unknown, Ghazal is absolutely terrified of horror movies.
